Barricelli translation and commentary published with free access!

I am delighted to announce that our English translation of Nils Aall Barricelli’s first publication on his artificial life simulations (Esempi Numerici di Processi di Evoluzione), originally published in Italian in 1954, and our accompanying commentary, have now been published in the Artificial Life journal. Not only that, but both papers are currently available for free on the journal’s website!

It has been quite a long journey, over the space of two years, to produce these papers, and I am so glad that the project is finally complete. I am really grateful to my co-author Giulia Bianchi for her invaluable input in producing the translation and contributing to the commentary. Thanks also to Massimo Curatella and Luca Manzoni, who have been enthusiastic supporters of the project throughout.

Both papers appear in Volume 32, Issue 3 (Fall 2026) of the journal. I am very grateful to the journal editors for making them both freely available for the time being.
